Coast and marine environment

Spain has approximately 7,880 km of coastline. An important part of the population and economic development is closely linked to the coast; likewise, the Spanish coastal environment still harbors an important natural heritage and biodiversity, and climate change is an added pressure factor on this coastal territory.

The rise in the average sea level, changes in the wind, current and wave regime, changes in the frequency and intensity of storms and in the temperature and acidity of the water are the main factors of the impact of climate change on coastal areas which, in Spain, are very vulnerable. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate in detail the current and potential impacts, to adjust -adapt- the actions carried out in the coastal area.
